Why do we call debt slavery?
Since we have the audacity to make such a counterculteral claim,
we thought we'd tell you why we stand by the statement.
Scriptures
"Suddenly, your debtors will rise up in anger. They will
turn on you and take all you have, while you stand trembling and
helpless" (Habakkuk 2:7 NLT)."
But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons
as slaves.
Widow, debt affects the generations 2 Kings 4
35 Even while they had their own kingdom, they did not serve
you even though you showered your goodness on them. You gave them
a large, fertile land, but they refused to turn from their wickedness.
36 "So now today we are slaves here in the land of plenty
that you gave to our ancestors! We are slaves among all this abundance!
The Problem: Slaves in a land of abundance
Nehemiah 9:36
"Suppose a certain man is just and does
what is lawful and right, and he has not feasted in the mountains
before... idols or worshiped them.... Suppose he is a merciful
creditor, not keeping the items given in pledge by poor debtors,
and does not rob the poor but instead gives food to the hungry
and provides clothes for people in need. And suppose he grants
loans without interest, stays away from injustice, is honest and
fair when judging others, and faithfully obeys my laws and regulations.
Anyone who does these things is just and will surely live.",
says the Sovereign LORD.
Ezekiel 18:5-9
Because debt is slavery, and people are precious cf. Matthew 25
Debt=being bound (by an oath)
My word is my bond - Matthew 23:16
Proverbs 22:7 borrower=slave
So... anti-debt=anti-slavery=pro-freedom
41 Then Jesus told him this story: "A man loaned money
to two people-- five hundred pieces of silver to one and fifty
pieces to the other.
42 But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them
both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more
after that?"
43 Simon answered, "I suppose the one for whom he canceled
the larger debt.""That's right," Jesus said
